Iran–Israel Conflict, The death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has created tensions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, a senior Hamas official on Saturday (August 17) dismissed US President Joe Biden’s claim that a ceasefire in Gaza would soon happen after talks between Israel and Hamas in the Gulf emirate of Qatar as “illusion”.
Talking to news agency AFP, Hamas’ political bureau member Sami Abu Zuhri said that saying that we are getting closer to an agreement is an illusion. We are not facing any agreement or real talks, but rather facing the imposition of American orders. In fact, Sami Abu Zuhri was responding to the statement of US President Joe Biden in which Biden had said that we are closer to talks than ever before.
US initiates ceasefire between Israel and Hamas
On Friday (August 16), US President Joe Biden said after two days of talks in Qatar that while Washington tried to bridge differences between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants, the two sides have been locked in a war in the Gaza Strip for more than 10 months. He said that the talks during the months-long ceasefire talks have proved futile so far.
Iran and Hezbollah blamed Israel for these deaths
Ismail Haniya was the head of Hamas’ political bureau. He was killed in an airstrike by Israel on (31 July 2024). At the same time, tensions have increased significantly in the Middle East since the death of Fuad Shukr, the head of the Hezbollah movement. After his death, Hezbollah, Iran and other Tehran-backed groups in the region vowed to take revenge. Israel was blamed for his death.
At least 10 people killed in Israeli attack in Lebanon
Meanwhile, Biden administration’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken was scheduled to visit Israel on Saturday (August 17) to finalize an agreement. But, as efforts continued towards a ceasefire, killings also increased in Gaza and Lebanon on Saturday. At the same time, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said that 10 people, including a Syrian woman and her two children, were killed in Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon. Whereas, Israel says that it has attacked Hezbollah’s weapons house.
