42 killed in Pakistan bus accident: At least 42 people were killed and dozens injured in two separate bus accidents in Rawalpindi and Balochistan, Pakistan on Sunday. The first accident occurred on the coastal highway of Makran when the brakes of a bus carrying Shia Muslim pilgrims returning from Iraq via Iran failed while passing through Balochistan. 13 people were killed and 32 injured in this accident.
Local police officials said that four people were trapped inside the bus, and a crane was called to rescue them. Police also said that the people who died in this accident were residents of Lahore and Gujranwala in Pakistan Punjab. Pakistan Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over this tragic accident.

The second accident occurred when a bus going from Haveli Kahuta in Pakistan occupied Kashmir to Rawalpindi fell into a ditch, killing at least 25 people. However, the Pakistan Home Ministry said that 29 people were killed in this incident. Government official Sardar Wahid said that after the accident, a crane was called to remove the debris and to ensure that no one was trapped underneath.
President and PM said that the injured should get better treatment
Meanwhile, officials in Balochistan say that arrangements are being made to send the bodies of the dead pilgrims to Punjab province for burial. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed their condolences over this tragic accident and asked the officials to ensure that the injured get better medical treatment.
Millions of Shia Muslims reach Iraq
In fact, millions of Shia Muslims are going to both these Arbaeen pilgrimages, which is a 40-day mourning ritual at the shrine of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad in Karbala, Iraq. Every year thousands of Pakistani Shia Muslims participate in Arbaeen. Here pilgrims have to travel 80 kilometers (50 miles) on foot from Najaf to Karbala, where Hussain’s father and Prophet Muhammad’s son-in-law Imam Ali was buried.
