Tehran: Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has criticized US President Donald Trump’s plan to use Iranian assets under US control to compensate for the damage caused to ships and their cargo passing through the strategic sea lanes of West Asia. Aragchi described the move as a ‘dangerous and provocative precedent’. Aragchi posted on
‘…then no one’s property remains safe’
‘Seizing another country’s assets to pay for unrelated future claims sets a dangerous precedent,’ Aragchi wrote on X. Those who take advantage of such money should remember that when governments normalize asset confiscation, no one’s wealth is safe. The chaos that follows will be neither good nor peaceful. Aragchi’s statement came after Trump’s post in which he had said on ‘Truth Social’ that any future damage caused to ships, cargo or maritime assets would be paid for with Iranian funds held by the US and under its control.
‘Payment will be made with Iran’s money’
Trump had said in his statement, ‘From now on all damage caused to ships, cargo or anything belonging to them will be paid for with Iranian money held by the United States.‘ He also said that the amount of loss ‘could be very large’, but the move would be ‘just and appropriate’. Trump’s statement came after the attack on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. Yemen’s Houthi rebels had claimed responsibility for these attacks. Houthi organization spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Sari Qasim Sari claimed in a statement issued on Telegram that his fighters targeted two Saudi oil tankers named ‘ENCELIA’ and ‘LAYLA’.
Fire broke out after attack on Saudi ship
The Saudi Press Agency quoted Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Transport as saying that the Saudi-owned ship ENCELIA was the victim of an attack while passing through the Bab-al-Mandeb strait in the Red Sea, after which the bow of the ship caught fire. According to the input, Iran has also been accused of targeting commercial vessels not following rules in the Strait of Hormuz. After this, Trump said in another post that if Houthi rebels carry out more attacks on ships in the future, America will hold Iran directly responsible for it.
How much of Iran’s assets is in America’s possession?
Let us tell you that during the agreement reached between America and Iran in June, lifting of sanctions on Iran’s frozen assets was one of the main demands of Tehran. However, this agreement later broke down. According to the report, the exact figure for the total value of Iran’s seized assets is unclear, as these assets are held in different financial systems around the world. According to American media reports, Iranian media and experts have estimated these frozen assets to be between $124 billion and $167 billion.
