‘We are not against the government’, Chinmay Das said on the arrest; Bail rejected, lathicharge on supporters

Chinmoy Das Bail Denied: Bangladeshi Hindu priest Chinmay Krishna Das Prabhu was denied bail by a court on Tuesday (November 26) and upheld the sedition case filed against him earlier this month over his outspoken stance on minority rights in the country. He was arrested from Dhaka airport on Monday (25 November). His reaction on the matter has come to light.

Speaking to Bangladeshi media, he said, “We are not against any political party or government. We urge all parties, including Islamic parties, to support the genuine demands. We love this country, love Bangladesh very much and want a united country, so that people of all sects and religions can live peacefully and work for the progress of Bangladesh.”

‘Don’t do anything that may disturb the peace’

Chinmoy Prabhu, who led several protests against the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh, was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Police on November 25 at Dhaka Airport. After being sent to judicial custody, the Hindu sadhu said, “We will not do anything that will disturb the peace. Control your emotions. Peace is the only way for us to move forward.”

Bangladesh Police used tear gas and lathicharge on Hindus protesting against the arrest of Chinmay Das. Tension escalated in Dhaka and Chittagong after police used tear gas to disperse a large crowd of Hindu protesters. This action was taken after India urged the caretaker government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Hindus and minorities.

‘Chinmay Das is being deliberately targeted’

CNN News-18 quoted sources as saying that Prabhu was stopped from leaving the country and authorities detained him at Dhaka airport and took him to an undisclosed location. ISKCON vice-president Radharaman Das told CNN-News18, “For becoming a prominent face of Hindu protests in Bangladesh, he is being treated like a terrorist and he is being targeted. He has led many campaigns against atrocities against Hindus. There were protests, but it was conducted peacefully.”
