Who is Muhammad Yunus?
Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader, was born on June 28, 1940. He founded the Grameen Bank and invented the ideas of microcredit and microfinance, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. Yunus and the Grameen Bank received the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to create economic and social development from the bottom up through microcredit”.
Muhammad Yunus has received many other awards
Yunus has won many other awards at the national and international level. In 2009 he was awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 2010 he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
In February 2011, Yunus co-founded Yunus Social Business – Global Initiatives (YSB) along with Saskia Bruystein, Sophie Eisenmann and Hans Reetz. He was appointed Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland in 2012 and served in that position until 2018. In addition, from 1998 to 2021 Yunus also served as a member of the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation, a public charity that supports the objectives of the United Nations.
