Controversy Over Bihari Word In Pakistan: A vigorous debate broke out in the assembly of Sindh province of Pakistan regarding the word ‘Bihari’. MLA Syed Ejaz ul Haq expressed strong objection to taunting and making fun of him by calling him ‘Bihari’. He said that this word is not only being misrepresented but is also insulting an entire community which had played an important role in the creation of Pakistan.
During his speech in the Sindh Assembly, Syed Ijaz ul Haq said, “Biharis are the people who created Pakistan. Today you consider them an abuser? To forget this is an insult to their sacrifices.” He strongly condemned the use of the word ‘Bihari’ jokingly. He described Biharis as a community that contributed to the creation of Pakistan.
Bihari Muslims in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the term ‘Bihari’ was used to describe Muslims who migrated during and after the partition of India. At the time of the partition of India in 1947, many Muslims from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh moved to Pakistan (Western and Eastern). After the formation of Bangladesh, the Bihari Muslims who returned to Pakistan were also called ‘Bihari’. In Pakistan they were identified as ‘Muhajir’ (migrant).
facing political discrimination
People of the community are still struggling for their original identity and respect. Muslims who migrated to Pakistan after partition were addressed with terms like “Bihari” and “Muhajir” in the local society. With time, the word ‘Bihari’ took on a negative and sarcastic connotation. Syed Ijaz ul Haq termed the mocking use of this word as inappropriate and said that it is an insult to those who contributed to the creation of Pakistan.
Major points of debate in Sindh Assembly
Syed Ejaz ul Haq says, “The word ‘Bihari’ should be properly respected. It is not an abuse, but a symbol of pride.” There should be a ban on using the word ‘Bihari’ in a negative manner. The struggle and contribution of the community should be acknowledged.
