In the year 2020, cremation was made mandatory for those who died due to corona, due to which people of many minority communities, including Muslims, could not get religious rights.

This order of the Sri Lankan government was strongly opposed by Muslims all over the world, after which the government withdrew its order in the year 2021. According to a cabinet note, on Monday, the Sri Lankan government has decided to apologize to the Muslims of the country for its imposed order. It states that the Cabinet has decided to apologize to all communities on behalf of the government. The Cabinet has also decided to enact a law to prevent the recurrence of such controversial steps.

Sri Lankan government will make a law for funeral
The cabinet statement said that it has been decided to make a law that will allow people to perform last rites according to their religion. The person related to the deceased person or his relatives will be able to perform the last rites according to his religion. After the order to perform cremation in the country came, Muslims had strongly opposed it, some people did not even take the dead body from the morgue.

The government was worried about the spread of corona
In fact, 276 Muslims were cremated in Sri Lanka before the order was repealed in 2021. At that time, the Sri Lankan government had opposed the permission to bury the bodies, citing health concerns. Citing the opinion of some experts, the government had said that burying the bodies would pollute the water, which poses a risk of increasing disease.
