Astronaut Sunita Williams: Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who reached the International Space Station (ISS) on a Boeing plane, will not be able to return this year. NASA said on Saturday (August 24) that the return of astronauts is not possible this year. Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore reached the space station in June 2024 on a Boeing plane. Their return was postponed due to a malfunction in the capsule of the Boeing Starliner.
NASA chief Bill Nelson says that both astronauts will now have to return to Earth by boarding SpaceX’s rocket. He said that the Starliner’s propulsion systems are faulty, so it is very risky for the astronauts to return to Earth by this vehicle.
NASA said that both astronauts are now expected to return to Earth in February 2025. NASA said that the SpaceX Crew Dragon will be launched next month as part of a regular astronaut rotation mission. Out of the four seats in this vehicle, two seats will be kept vacant for Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore. With this, the Starliner capsule will separate from the International Space Station without any crew members and will try to return to Earth without astronauts.
Elon Musk’s plane will bring astronauts back to Earth
Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is considered to be Boeing’s biggest competitor, but at present Boeing is under question regarding the quality of its aircraft. It is very risky for astronauts to return by Boeing aircraft. In such a situation, NASA has chosen SpaceX Crew Dragon for their return. Boeing was hoping that its Starliner would achieve its target this time after many years of hard work, but so far it seems to be failing. In 2016, Boeing had set a target of $1.6 billion for the development of Starliner, but now it is increasing many times.
Sunita Williams has been stuck in space for 80 days
In fact, Indian-origin astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are former military test pilots and are quite experienced. Both astronauts were the first pilots to ride the Boeing Starliner. They flew to the ISS on June 5 for 8 days, but due to a malfunction in the propulsion system of the Boeing aircraft, they have been stranded in space for the last 80 days. At that time it was told that the return to Earth has been postponed due to leakage of helium gas from the capsule. Despite all efforts, the leak could not be fixed, after which NASA has now chosen the SpaceX aircraft for the return of the astronauts.
How will Sunita and Wilmore spend 8 months in space?
NASA said that both the astronauts have already stayed in space for a long time twice. So they understand the risks associated with the test flight. This includes staying in space for longer than the prescribed time. NASA said that for the next few months they will do scientific work on the space station, repair work in space and perhaps even do a ‘spacewalk’.
To stay in space for a long time, astronauts have to eat better and exercise for two and a half hours. During this time, muscles and bones need to be kept strong. In space, powders like green tea and soft drinks have to be taken along with rice and noodles. Both astronauts will have to be very careful to stay for a long time.
