Delhi ACB News: The Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch has taken major action in connection with corruption in Delhi government-run hospitals during the Covid pandemic. On Thursday (July 25), the ACB arrested a former chief engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the owners of two private companies in this case.
According to Joint Commissioner of Police (ACB) Madhur Verma, Public Works Department officials had allegedly made payments to a private company on the basis of fake bills for work not done or incomplete work. Due to this act of the officials, the government treasury suffered a loss of about Rs 200 crore.
Former Additional Director General (ADG) of PWD and then Chief Engineer (Health Sector) Anil Kumar Ahuja and owners of AV Enterprises and Vivek Associates Vinay Kumar and Akshitij Birmani have been identified as the accused. According to the ACB official, a case was registered against the three under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and they were arrested on Thursday.
Earlier, based on a complaint, the ACB had investigated the works allotted to various private companies and contractors for Delhi government hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the investigation, the ACB found that Ahuja had allegedly approved 56 works, which were later allotted to 10 companies without differentiating between ’emergency’ and ‘urgent work’.
The company owner could not show the necessary bills
Joint Police Commissioner Madhur Verma said that when asked, the alleged company owners failed to provide the ‘e-way bill (transportation bill)’ of the material purchased for the work. The company owners showed the bills for purchasing the material which were issued four to six months after the completion of the work.
Fake company bills given to investigation agency
He said that on investigation of the purchase ‘vouchers’ filed by the alleged companies, it was found that some of the companies that issued the ‘vouchers’ did not even exist. Financial transactions worth about Rs 1.25 crore have been detected between Ahuja and Vinay Kumar, owner of AV Enterprises.
