5% supernumerary quota in JNU, additional opportunity for children of employees; debate broke out

Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has taken an important decision from the new academic session 2026-27. The university has approved 5 percent supernumerary quota for the children of its teaching and non-teaching staff. This means that now the children of these employees will be able to get admission on additional seats in Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) courses.

This decision was taken in the Executive Council meeting held on April 15. Earlier, JNU had less than 1 percent supernumerary quota for children of employees, which was limited to only a few sections. Now it has been increased to 5 percent and teaching staff has also been included in it.

What is supernumerary quota?

Supernumerary quota means extra seats. That means, the seats which are already fixed will not be reduced. New seats will be added for this quota. The university administration says that this will not affect the seats of general students. An official said that these seats will be different from the existing seats, so that there is no pressure on the normal admission process.

Demand was rising for a long time

There has been a long standing demand from the teaching and non-teaching staff of JNU that there should be a fair quota for their children like other central universities. In many central universities of the country like Delhi University (DU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU), a provision of 5 to 15 percent already exists for the children of employees.

In view of this, the JNU administration formed a committee, which investigated the entire matter and recommended giving 5 percent supernumerary quota. This recommendation was first approved by the Academic Council, then finalized by the Executive Council.

Who will get the benefit?

Children of JNU regular teaching and non-teaching staff who died during their service will also be included in this quota. This decision is considered a relief for those families whose parents have been serving the university for years.

The admission process will remain the same

This quota does not mean that admission will be given without examination. The university has made it clear that all students will have to pass CUET-UG and CUET-PG examinations. Must fulfill minimum eligibility conditions. Admission will be given on the basis of merit only. That means the rules will remain the same for everyone, only there will be extra seats.

Voice of protest from students

There was a stir in student politics also on this decision. JNU Students Union (JNUSU) President Aditi Mishra opposed this move. He says that children of professors and employees already have good resources and environment, they do not need a separate quota. He called it a move to benefit those close to the administration.

The university administration says that this step has been taken in view of the long standing demand of the employees. Also, since such a system already exists in other central universities, it was considered appropriate to implement it in JNU also. According to officials, this will neither reduce the general seats nor will there be any relaxation in the admission process.
