NEET OMR controversy – NTA investigation reveals fake sheet created by AI, claims of tampering rejected

NEET OMR Sheet Controversy: NTA has completed the investigation into the OMR sheet controversy that came to light after the results of NEET UG 2026. The agency says that in the cases where candidates had alleged irregularities in the OMR sheets and huge difference in marks. During investigation, one of the OMR sheets was found to be a fake sheet prepared with the help of AI, while in the other case it was confirmed that the document had been tampered with. After this, NTA made it clear that legal action will be taken against those who submit fake or AI generated documents to defame the examination process.

How did the whole controversy start?

After the result was released, a student in Pune, Maharashtra claimed that he had received two different OMR sheets. According to the student, he had downloaded one OMR sheet from the NTA website on the night of 13th July, while the other was received through email on 15th July. His name was on both the sheets, but the answers recorded in both were different. The student’s father claimed that after matching the first OMR sheet with the official answer key, his son was getting 707 marks, whereas in the declared result he got only 217 marks. Similarly, another student from Beed district of Maharashtra alleged that he was given 95 marks in the official scorecard, whereas on the basis of the final answer key, he should have got 522 marks.

What came to light in the investigation?

After investigating both the cases, NTA said that the OMR sheet submitted by the Pune student was completely prepared with the help of AI. In the case of the Beed student, the agency found that the documents submitted had been tampered with. According to the agency, investigation revealed that the documents did not match the original OMR sheet.

NTA warned of legal action

After completion of the investigation, NTA issued a statement on its official social media platform X saying that the agency is continuously monitoring and investigating all the complaints. NTA has appealed to the students and parents to submit only the original OMR sheets for verification. The agency said that if any complaint is made on the basis of fake or AI generated OMR sheet, then legal action can be taken against the concerned complainant. Amidst this, Congress has also alleged irregularities in the marksheet of a candidate. The party has claimed that the OMR sheet of one candidate was replaced with the sheet of another candidate and has raised questions on the Central Government and the Education Ministry regarding this matter.

Cases of complaints were reported from many states

The OMR controversy was not limited to Maharashtra only, candidates from some other states including Karnataka also alleged that the marks given in their final result did not match with the marks calculated on the basis of the final answer key. Some candidates claimed that due to reduction in their marks there was a big change in their All India Rank. The affected students demanded clarification from NTA and transparency in the evaluation process.
