ALERT! India is becoming the diabetes capital, alarm bell for Indians

Diabetes in India: India is called the capital of diabetes. About a quarter of the world’s diabetics live here. Most of these people are those whose diabetes has never been treated. This shocking revelation has been made in a study published in ‘The Lancet’ medical journal. According to this report, in the year 2022, about 828 million people above 18 years of age in the world were affected by diabetes.

Of these, more than a quarter i.e. about 212 million were in India. This is followed by China 148 million, America 42 million, Pakistan 36 million, Indonesia 25 million and Brazil 22 million. Let us know about this study and the risk of diabetes in the country…

How many countries were studied?

This study conducted by NCD Risk Factor Collaboration was supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). 200 countries were included in this study. Senior author Professor Majid Ezzati of Imperial College London said that this study reveals the disparities in diabetes around the world.

In many low and middle income countries, the treatment rate is very slow or has stopped at one place, due to which the number of diabetes patients is continuously increasing. He said that it is worrying that due to lack of treatment in these countries, serious problems are increasing in the lives of many patients. Due to this, any part of the body is getting damaged, heart disease, kidney damage or eye problems are occurring. In some cases, there is even a risk of premature death.

Diabetes rate increased

In this study it was told that the number of diabetes patients in the world is continuously increasing. In 32 years from 1990 to 2022, the number of male diabetics increased from 6.8% to 14.3%. In case of women, this number has increased from 6.9% to 13.9%. This means that the risk of diabetes in the world is increasing twice as fast. The greatest risk has been seen in low and middle income countries. In some high-income countries such as Japan, Canada, France, Spain and Denmark, diabetes rates have remained unchanged or declined slightly in the last three decades.

Who are at higher risk of diabetes in India?

It was told in this study that the risk of diabetes is increasing equally rapidly in both men and women in India. While among women this rate was 11.9% in 1990, it has increased to 24% in 2022. At the same time, the figures for men increased from 11.3% to 21.4%. This means that there has not been much increase in gender, however, there has been a slight change in the treatment rate among them. In such a situation, everyone needs to be careful, worried and aware about diabetes.
