Daily expense only ₹ 50! Once a week insulin launched in India, know complete details

Weekly Insulin Launch In India 2026: There is good news for diabetic patients. Now such insulin has become available in India, which has to be taken not every day but only once in a week. Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has launched its weekly insulin under the brand name ‘Aweekly’. The company claims that this medicine can prove to be a great relief for those patients who have to take insulin injections daily or who avoid frequent injections.

Beneficial for whom?

Doctors say that many diabetic patients avoid starting insulin only because they are afraid of taking injections daily. Some people travel frequently, while many people have busy schedules making it difficult to take insulin on time every day. For such patients, this insulin, given once a week, can make the treatment much easier than before.

A large number of patients avoid taking insulin

Diabetes expert of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Dr. S. Of. According to Wangnu, patients who have been suffering from diabetes for 8 to 10 years and whose blood sugar is not controlled by medicines, should start insulin on time. By doing this, the risk of damage to eyes, kidneys, nerves and other body parts can be reduced to a great extent. Despite this, a large number of patients avoid taking insulin, which can cause serious health problems in the future.

Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk India, says that currently about 60 lakh people in India are using insulin, whereas many more people need it. He believes that taking insulin only once a week will make the treatment easier and more patients will start taking insulin on the advice of the doctor.

how much will it cost

If we talk about price, this new insulin is said to be cheaper than many other insulin options available in the market. According to the company, its average cost is around Rs 261 per week i.e. around Rs 50 per day. This medicine will be available in two pre-filled pens. The first 700 units/ml pen is priced at Rs 2,611 and the second 2,100 units/ml pen is priced at Rs 7,883. Usually a patient requires about 70 units of insulin a week, although the doctor will decide the quantity according to the patient’s condition. The company believes that with this new technology, more and more patients will start taking insulin on time. This will help in controlling blood sugar for a long time and may also improve HbA1c levels. HbA1c is a test that reveals the average blood sugar level over the last three months.

Does it also have disadvantages?

According to Indian Express, this medicine also has some possible side effects. The most common side effect is hypoglycemia, which means excessively low blood sugar. According to doctors, this risk is equal to that of daily insulin. At the same time, the problem of low blood sugar may be seen more in patients with type 1 diabetes. In such patients, the fast-acting insulin administered before meals will have to be continued as before, while this weekly insulin can be used in place of the long-acting insulin administered daily. Experts say that this new insulin definitely increases convenience for the patients, but it should not be started or stopped without the doctor’s advice.
