What is progeria?
Progeria is a genetic disorder, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS). In this disease, the body of children starts aging very fast. While normal children grow according to their age, the rate of aging of children suffering from progeria is 7-8 times more than normal.

Symptoms of Progeria

• The symptoms of progeria start appearing in childhood. Children look normal in the first few months after birth, but by the age of 1-2 years the symptoms start becoming clear.
• Hair fall: Children’s scalp hair, eyebrows and eyelashes start falling quickly.
• Wrinkles in the skin: Wrinkles and thinning start appearing in the skin of children.
• Stopping of height and weight: The height and weight of these children stop increasing in comparison to normal children.
• Facial Features: The face is large, the eyes are large, the nose is thin and pointed, and the jaw is small.
• Bone and joint problems: Bone weakness, joint pain and difficulty in walking.
• Heart problems: Children suffering from this disease also have heart related problems, which increases the risk of heart attack.

Cause of Progeria
Progeria is a genetic disorder caused by a defect in a gene called LMNA. This defect produces a special protein in the body, which works to increase the age of cells. However, this disease is not inherited, rather it is caused by genetic changes.

Progeria treatment
There is currently no permanent cure for progeria, but some treatments can help reduce the symptoms of this disease. Such as, physiotherapy for bone problems, medicines for heart problems, and regular medical care for children.

Children suffering from progeria have a low life expectancy. Usually these children live between 13 and 20 years. The main cause of death of these children is heart disease or stroke.
