Recently, Munawar Faruqui told about his 1.5-year-old son who was suffering from Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease symptoms

Symptoms of this disease include persistent high fever (5 or more days), red, dry and cracked lips, red tongue called ‘strawberry tongue’. These include red eyes and painful swelling of lymph glands in the neck. Other associated symptoms include irritability in young children, less swelling in the hands and feet, and peeling of the skin around the nails in the second to third week of the illness. Rash, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, red eyes, red or cracked lips or tongue, swollen hands and feet, peeling of the skin, and burning sensation in the throat, mouth, and lips.

In countries where BCG is given, sudden reactivation will also be seen with erythema and redness around the scar at the BCG site. When blood tests are done, reports show features that overlap with infection, i.e., increased inflammatory markers. However, unless this disease is properly identified and treated. Fever and other symptoms do not respond to regular antibiotic treatments. Not all features of Kawasaki disease are seen in all children and the presence of some of these features raises suspicion for evaluation. Heart related problems can also occur due to this disease.
