Supreme Court: The dispute over the clashes in West Bengal regarding the Panchayat elections to be held on July 8 has reached the Supreme Court. After the Supreme Court’s comment, now the State Election Commission has decided to deploy one company of central force for every district in the Panchayat elections. In such a situation, the Election Commission will deploy 22 central force companies in 22 districts of Bengal.
According to the news agency PTI, the Supreme Court made a strong comment in its decision regarding the Bengal Panchayat elections, saying, “Conducting elections is not getting a ‘license for violence’.” In fact, the apex court refused to interfere with the order of the Calcutta High Court, in which the State Election Commission in West Bengal was directed to seek and deploy central forces for the panchayat elections to be held on July 8.
Bengal government and state election commission’s petition rejected
The Supreme Court dismissed the petitions of the West Bengal government and the State Election Commission challenging the High Court order. The court said that the direct meaning of the order of the High Court is that free and fair elections can be conducted in the state.
High court orders, fair elections have to be held
During the hearing, a bench of Justice BV Nagaratna and Justice Nose Mishra said, “Conducting elections cannot be a license for violence.” The bench said that it is true that the intention of the High Court order is to conduct free and fair elections in the state, as the panchayat elections are being held here on a single day.
No interference needed in the order- SC
The Supreme Court said that the order of the High Court does not call for any interference and the Court is not inclined to interfere in any other direction issued by the High Court in this regard. The bench noted that the lawyers representing the state and the SEC have argued that the Supreme Court should intervene in the High Court’s direction for requisitioning and deployment of central forces for all districts of West Bengal.
Let us tell you that on June 15, the Calcutta High Court had directed the State Election Commission to requisition and deploy central forces in the entire West Bengal within 48 hours for the panchayat elections.
