S Jaishankar Slams Pakistan Over Terrorism: Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday, October 5 said that the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is ‘not moving forward’ and has not held meetings in the last few years because one member of the regional grouping is promoting ‘cross-border terrorism’. Used to be.
The Foreign Minister has made this comment without naming any country at a time when he is going to visit Pakistan this month to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Islamabad.
No summit took place after 2014
SAARC has not been very effective since 2016 and has not held any biennial summit since the last summit was held in Kathmandu in 2014. Answering a question related to the revival of SAARC at an event, Jaishankar said, “At present SAARC is not moving forward. It has not even held any meeting and the very simple reason for this is that at least one of its members is from SAARC. Attempting to promote cross-border terrorism against one member or more.”
He said, “If you all are sitting together and cooperating and at the same time this type of terrorism is going on. It is really a challenge for us that you ignore it and move ahead.”
Who is part of SAARC?
SAARC is a regional grouping that includes India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said, “Terrorism is something that is unacceptable and regardless of the global perspective, if any of our neighbors continues to do it, then it should be stopped. This is the reason why SAARC meetings have not been held in recent years. Is.”
