World Top Rice Exporter: At present there is a huge competition going on between India and Pakistan regarding rice export. While India is the world’s largest rice exporter, Pakistan ranks fourth in terms of rice exports. India alone exports 40 percent rice to the world. Now both the countries are giving many types of concessions to capture the world rice market.
Actually, India and Pakistan have taken such a decision, due to which the whole world is happy. Both the countries have once again started exporting rice, not only this, now both the countries have also abolished the price limit for rice export. Due to which the prices of various varieties of rice have decreased all over the world. At present, India has lifted the ban on export of non-Basmati white rice. India had banned the sale of rice abroad a year ago. But after the high yield in the year 2024, the country’s warehouses have become full for domestic needs.
Pakistan is facing tough competition from India
Pakistan had set the price for Basmati rice at $1300 per metric ton in the year 2023 and at $550 for non-Basmati rice. Whereas India had fixed the price of Basmati rice at $950 per metric ton. Now both the countries have withdrawn the price ceiling (MEP). India and Pakistan are the only countries that produce Basmati rice. This rice is known all over the world for its unique taste and aroma. Pakistan Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan said in a notification issued on September 28 that the government has acted on the request of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan to abolish the MEP. Khan said that last year India had banned rice export, due to which the minimum price of rice was fixed.
Pakistan wanted to earn more profit
In fact, after the ban by India, Pakistan became the only Basmati rice exporting country in the world. During this time, Pakistan was trying to earn more profit by fixing the minimum export price of rice. Pakistan’s minister said that after India lifted the ban on rice export, global prices of rice have declined. Rice exporters of Pakistan now have to face tough competition. Pakistan minister said that after removing the minimum price, there is a possibility of increase in rice exports of Pakistan. Pakistan can earn revenue of 5 billion dollars from rice export.
Thailand and Vietnam also up in rice exports
Experts believe that this will not be easy for Pakistan, because it is competing with India. On the other hand, after the relaxation given by India and Pakistan, other rice producers are in trouble. India alone exports 65 percent of Basmati rice. Whereas Pakistan exports 35 percent Basmati rice. Thailand and Vietnam are the two largest rice exporters in the world after India. In the financial year 2022-23, India had earned a revenue of $ 11 billion by exporting rice.
