Bangladesh Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman is Sheikh Hasina’s brother-in-law, now he will run the government!

Bangladesh Government Crisis: In the neighboring country Bangladesh, the army has taken the command of the country in its hands. The army has announced to form the government in the country. Bangladesh Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman and Sheikh Hasina are relatives of each other. According to Bangladesh media reports, the Army Chief is Sheikh Hasina’s brother-in-law.

General Waqar is a relative of Sheikh Hasina

According to local media reports, the Bangladesh Army Chief’s wife (Begum Sarahnaz Kamalika Rahman) is the daughter of Sheikh Hasina’s uncle. General Waqar’s father-in-law and Sheikh Hasina’s uncle is Mustafizur Rahman, who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from December 24, 1997 to December 23, 2000.

He took over as Army Chief this year

Bangladesh Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman took over the leadership of the country’s defense forces in June 2024. After completing graduation from the Defense Services Command and Staff College, he obtained an MA degree in Defense Studies from King’s College, London.

Where did General Vakal work

According to the army website, General Waqar has commanded an infantry battalion, the BD Army’s only independent infantry brigade and an infantry division. In a career spanning three and a half decades, he has also worked closely with Sheikh Hasina. He has also served as the principal staff officer in the Armed Forces Division under the Prime Minister’s Office.

General Waqar Uz Zaman, taking the reins of Bangladesh in his hands, said that he would take full responsibility to bring the situation under control. He assured that the army would fulfill all the demands of the protesters.

Army chief Waqar-uz-Zaman also said that he held a meeting with representatives of the BNP, Jatiya Party and Jamaat-e-Islami, in which Afis Najrul and Jonayat Saki were also present.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina has reached Delhi. If sources are to be believed, she has not asked for asylum here but she will definitely stay in India for some time. She may leave for London (UK) from here.
