Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan made it clear on Friday (July 17) that he and his party will be in favor of removing the liquor ban law in Bihar only if first people are made widely aware about the ill effects of alcohol. He said that an issue like prohibition cannot be seen only from the revenue perspective, because the sentiments of the society are also linked to it.
In Patna, Chirag Paswan said, “I and my party have always been in favor of spreading awareness among the people about the ill effects of alcohol. When the then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar brought the prohibition law, we were not a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), yet we supported it.”
RJD Chief Lalu Yadav’s health deteriorated, admitted to IGIMS, Patna, what did the doctors say?
In Bihar, there is a complete ban on the manufacture, sale, storage and consumption of liquor and other intoxicants under the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016. This law was passed by the then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Has been involved in the major policies of the government.
Social aspects are more important than revenue
Chirag Paswan admitted that the state is losing revenue due to prohibition, but said that the decision to end liquor prohibition only to increase income would not be right.
He said, “I believe that this is not the right time to push the large population of Bihar into the quagmire of liquor again without adequate awareness. Prohibition should not be seen only from the economic point of view, because social sentiments are also attached to it. There can be many other ways of increasing the revenue and we should pay attention to them.”
However, he also said that the possibility of discussing this issue in future cannot be ruled out.
The burden should not fall on the public
The Union Minister said that many sectors including infrastructure are developing rapidly in Bihar, hence there is a need to increase the revenue. But this burden should not be put on the common people.
He said, “Both ministers of state of our party, Sanjay Paswan and Sanjay Singh, clearly present their stand on such issues in the cabinet meetings. There should definitely be emphasis on increasing the revenue, but its burden should not fall on the public.”
Also attacked RJD
Chirag Paswan also reacted to the resignation of RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari. He said, “I respect Mrityunjay Tiwari ji. The decency and dignity with which he defended a party like RJD is commendable. When people like him leave the party, it means that all limits of tolerance have been crossed.”
Along with this, he targeted RJD and alleged that “someone is hollowing RJD from inside like a termite.”
