Cold Blooded Murder: Former IPS officer (IPS) Amod Kanth says that extra-judicial killings or fake encounter deaths are nothing but brutal killings. Whatever popular opinion may be formed about it in a society or community suffering from problems related to real or perceived anarchy.
Amod Kanth told news agency PTI that there could be no more appropriate time in the history of India’s criminal justice system to discuss the death of alleged criminals as a result of extrajudicial killings or fake encounters.
khaki on broken wings part 2
Recently, the second part of Amod Kanth’s ‘Police Diaries’ series ‘Khaki on Broken Wings’ has come, in which he has revealed some of the most sensational and heinous crimes that made national headlines. Kanth said that for decades the police have used this ‘shortcut’ to deliver so-called justice.
“Such killings or fake encounter-deaths are nothing but premeditated killings, irrespective of the popular opinion among the society or community affected by problems related to real or perceived lawlessness,” he said.
Story of Mafia Romesh Sharma
Khaki on Broken Wings has been published by Bloomsberry India, in which Kanth discusses the flaws in the criminal justice system. The stories of crime he has mentioned include the story of a mafia Romesh Sharma. According to him, Romesh Sharma used to intimidate victims to grab property worth crores and influence the investigation using his reach to influential people in politics and the corporate world.
Mention of Jessica Lal murder case
He also mentions the complex story of the ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj’s escape from Delhi’s Tihar Jail, the ‘BMW hit and run’ case that claimed several lives, and the fight for justice in the Jessica Lal murder case.
Amod Kanth says that whatever may be the obligation to maintain security, law and order and crime control, but the police and judicial machinery cannot be allowed to go beyond the prescribed legal process.
He said, “To kill someone, even if he is a dreaded and most wanted criminal, when he is in police or judicial custody or reasonable control would be murder or culpable homicide.”
