Haryana and J&K results will change the numbers game of Rajya Sabha! Know who will be stronger ‘NDA’ or ‘INDIA’

Rajya Sabha Seat: The results of Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections 2024 have surprised everyone. On one hand, in Haryana, BJP scored a hat-trick and Congress suffered a setback, while on the other hand, in Jammu and Kashmir, the saffron party became the number one party in terms of voting percentage and Congress remained at the third position.

In Haryana, BJP won 48 seats while Congress won 37 seats. Whereas in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP won 29 seats while Congress got only 6 seats. However, Congress contested the elections in alliance with National Conference and NC got 42 seats. If seen in this way, BJP will take power in one state and Congress will be its power ally in another state.

How much will Rajya Sabha’s numbers game change?

Voting to elect Rajya Sabha members is done by MLAs of state assemblies. It often happens that the party which has more MLAs wins. The number of Rajya Sabha seats varies in every state. Seats are available according to the population of the state. Since 1966, Haryana has been electing 5 Rajya Sabha members for 6 years, that is, there are 5 Rajya Sabha seats in the state, out of which currently 4 seats are held by BJP and one seat is by an independent candidate.

In the recently held Rajya Sabha by-election, BJP’s Kiran Chaudhary became a member from Haryana. His tenure will end on 9 April 2026. Earlier in the month of April, Subhash Barla had become a member from BJP, whose tenure will end on 2 April 2030. Before that, Krishna Lal Panwar of BJP had become a member in 2022, whose tenure will end in 2028.

Before that, Ram Chander Jangra became a member from BJP in 2020 and his tenure will end in 2026. At the same time, there is one independent member, Karthikeya Sharma, whose tenure will end in 2028. There is no Rajya Sabha member of Congress from Haryana.

Jammu and Kashmir’s numbers game

Elections were not held in Jammu and Kashmir for the last 10 years. In the elections held in 2015, 4 members were elected from Jammu and Kashmir Rajya Sabha. The tenure of all of them has ended and due to no elections, no new member has been elected. Now elections were held on 90 seats, in which BJP won 29 seats and National Conference won 42 seats. Congress has won 6, PDP has won 3 and 7 independent candidates have won. In this way, MLAs have been elected on a total of 87 seats.

How are Rajya Sabha members elected?

To elect Rajya Sabha members, 1 is added to the number of vacant seats, after which it is divided by the total assembly seats. After this, 1 more is added to the next number. Understand it like this, suppose elections are to be held on 5 seats from Haryana, if we add one to it then the number becomes 6. Total members are 90 so dividing it by 6 the number comes to 15. If we add one to this then the number becomes 6. If it is 16, then to win one seat, voting of 16 MLAs will be required.

Who is how strong in Rajya Sabha?

At present, if we talk about Rajya Sabha members, most of them are from NDA. The total number is 120, of which BJP alone has 96 members. Similarly, 4 members are from JDUA and one or two members each from other parties.

Talking about INDIA alliance, it has a total of 87 members, which include 27 from Congress, 12 from TMC, 10 from Aam Aadmi Party, 10 from DMK, 5 from RJD, 4 from SP, 4 from CPIM, 3 from JMM, 3 from CPI. Apart from 2, one and two members each from other parties are included.

Talking about other opposition members, who are not part of any alliance, they include 8 members of YSRCP, 7 of BJD, 4 of BRS, 4 of AIADMK, 1 member of BSP and one member of MNF. This total number is 25.
