Iran Politics: Iran’s politics is a sign of a big change. Iran International’s report claims that Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been selected as his successor. This decision was taken in a secret meeting held on 26 September. This meeting was called by Ali Khamenei. This meeting was organized due to the deteriorating health of 85 year old Khamenei.
In this meeting, there was a lot of pressure on the 60-member Assembly of Experts to take a unanimous decision. Khamenei and his representatives also issued threats to the members to ensure that the decision was taken unanimously. It is being said that Mojtaba Khamenei has increased his influence significantly in the last few years, although he is rarely seen in public.
Mojtaba’s growing power and role
Mojtaba Khamenei is known for playing an important role in suppressing the protests that took place after the 2009 elections. In 2021, he was given the title of Ayatollah, which is an essential condition of the Constitution to become the supreme leader. This decision was kept secret to avoid public anger.
The meeting was kept confidential to avoid public opposition.
The report said the assembly resolved to keep the decision secret because they feared widespread public demonstrations. The assembly members were also warned of serious consequences if they leaked any kind of information.
Ali Khamenei is planning to hand over power to his son, so that there can be a smooth transfer of power within his lifetime and any kind of opposition can be avoided. Many posts regarding this matter have also appeared on social media, in which it is being claimed that Ali Khamenei has gone into a coma.
These reports gained momentum when the New York Times reported on Khamenei’s serious health condition in October. However, no official confirmation has been made yet by the Iranian authorities in this regard.
