It was told that India clearly said that this treaty has been in force since 1960 and now its various articles should be realistically evaluated. India sent a notice related to the treaty to Pakistan on 30 August.

What did India demand in the notice?

India wrote in the notice that the use of the water of the Indus river and the demographics are changing, India is moving towards clean energy and it is important that changes in the treaty be considered. India also slammed Pakistan by mentioning terrorism. India said that Pakistan is constantly trying to take unfair advantage of our generosity.

Highlights of Indus Water Treaty

– On 19 September 1960, the Indus Water Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan. The World Bank mediated this treaty. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan signed this treaty in Karachi.

– Under the treaty, the water of the Indus river was divided. The water of the three eastern rivers of the Indus river system (Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas) went to India and the water of the three western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab) went to Pakistan.

-India also has the right to generate power through run-of-the-river (ROR) projects on western rivers.
