Sri Lanka’s most ‘shameful’ record in T20 World Cup history

Sri Lanka Unwanted Record T20 WC: On Wednesday, the teams of Sri Lanka and New Zealand were face to face in the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The match was very exciting, in which Sri Lanka made a very shameful record in its name. This unwanted record was set for the first time in the 19-year-old T20 World Cup history.

In fact, in the match, Sri Lanka made its smallest powerplay total in the history of T20 World Cup. While chasing runs, Sri Lanka scored only 20/2 runs in the powerplay i.e. the first 6 overs. In this way a shameful record was registered in the name of Sri Lanka.

The match was interesting in the first innings

In the match, Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl. New Zealand, who came to bat first, witnessed a fluctuating innings. Earlier the Kiwi team had lost only 2 wickets till the score of 75 runs. Looking at this score it seemed that the Kiwi team could easily reach 170 or 180.

But then suddenly the tables turned and New Zealand lost 4 wickets in a span of just 09 runs. The team’s score became 6 wickets for 84 runs. From here it seemed that New Zealand would not be able to reach even 120 runs. But then Cole McConchie and Mitchell Santner made a partnership of 84 runs in 47 balls for the seventh wicket and took the score to 168/7 in 20 overs.

Sri Lanka suffered a crushing defeat

It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka had to face a crushing defeat by 61 runs in the match. In the run chase, the team could score only 107/8 runs in 20 overs. Kamindu Mendis played the biggest innings for the team and scored 31 runs with the help of 4 fours in 23 balls. Apart from this, no other batsman could touch the 30 run mark. Whereas for New Zealand, Rachin Ravindra took maximum 4 wickets.

With this defeat, Sri Lanka was out of the race for the semi-finals. On the other hand, with the victory, New Zealand’s claim to the semi-finals has become stronger. Now if the Kiwi team also wins its last match, then it will qualify for the semi-finals.
