An official statement of the Government of India said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of TV Somanathan as Cabinet Secretary for a term of two years from August 30, 2024. According to the report of news agency IANS, from the date of assuming charge till the time he takes over as Cabinet Secretary, he will work as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat.

He has served as Deputy Secretary (Budget) in the Tamil Nadu government, Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation Limited from 2007 to 2010, Joint Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office.
