Manipur Violence Update: The violence that started last month in Manipur seems to be reducing gradually. After the appeal of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, people have returned 140 weapons from different places of Manipur. Shah had appealed to surrender the weapons during the Manipur tour.
Manipur Police said that the 140 weapons surrendered include SLR 29, Carbine, AK, INSAS Rifle, INSAS LMG, .303 Rifle, 9mm Pistol, .32 Pistol, M16 Rifle, Smoke Gun and Tear Gas, Locally Made Pistol, Stun Gun, Modified Rifle, JVP and JVP Grenade Launcher are included.
What did Amit Shah say?
Amit Shah had said during his tour that if the surrender is not done then action will be taken. He visited the violence-hit areas for three days. He had a meeting with every community including the cabinet ministers of the state. Along with this, the Home Minister appealed to all the people to maintain peace. He said, “Don’t pay attention to the rumours. Now the situation in the state is fine.” After his statement, people surrendered weapons in large numbers.
How did Manipur violence start?
In Manipur, this violence is taking place between Naga-Kuki and Meitei communities. 3 May All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) took out ‘Tribal Unity March’. Only after this violence started in the state. In this rally, there was a clash between tribal and non-tribal community. The rally was taken out in protest against the demand for grant of tribal status by the Meitei community.
On Wednesday (May 31), Shah reached the relief camps of the Kuki and Meitei communities and took stock, as well as assured the people of help. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had also issued a warning that legal action would be taken against those who were found to be possessing arms and ammunition illegally.
