Amarnath Yatra suspended: The situation has changed due to heavy rains in many parts of the country on Sunday (11 August 2024). The Meteorological Department has said that there is a possibility of rain in many states including North India for the next few days. Meanwhile, officials said that due to heavy rains, the Amarnath Yatra on the Baltal route was suspended on Sunday (11 August 2024). With this, now this journey is suspended on both routes.

The Pahalgam route was closed for repair work on Wednesday (7 August 2024). Kashmir Divisional Commissioner VK Bidhuri said that on Sunday, there was heavy rain on both the routes of Amarnath Yatra, Pahalgam and Baltal routes. He said, “Due to heavy rains, there is a need for immediate repair and maintenance work on the Baltal route of Amarnath Yatra. In view of the safety of the pilgrims, travel will not be allowed from the Baltal route tomorrow also.

Alert regarding flood in Karnataka

Rivers in Karnataka are in spate due to heavy rains. Due to the rains, the chain of the 19th gate of the Pampa Sagar Dam on the Tungabhadra River in Koppal, the state, broke, due to which a large amount of water came out and a flood warning has been issued. Sources in the Water Resources Department said that they will have to reduce the water level to 65 to 55 TMC from the total current capacity of the dam of 105 TMC for the repair work of the reservoir.

The department has opened all the gates except five to start the repair work of the reservoir. According to sources, 89,000 cusecs of water is being released from the dam right now. After inspecting the condition of the dam, Shivraj Tangadagi, the minister in charge of Koppal district, said, “We may have to release at least 60 to 65 TMC of water from the dam. The problem can be solved only after releasing 20 feet of water, so it is necessary to empty the dam.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who holds the charge of Water Resources Department, reached Koppal to take stock of the situation. There is no fear of flood in the lower part of Tungabhadra river, although the flow of water has increased. Due to the release of large amount of water from the dam, people have been warned not to go near the river.

Rain wreaks havoc in Himachal

In Himachal Pradesh, more than 280 roads remained closed due to landslides and flash floods caused by heavy rains for the last two days. Officials said that water from overflowing drains in Una has entered many houses, while Lahaul and Spiti Police has advised residents and travelers to be more cautious and not to cross the Jahalman drain due to rapid rise in water level. Officials said that rescue operations are being carried out to trace about 30 people who went missing after the flash floods in Kullu, Mandi and Shimla districts on July 31, but no major success has been achieved yet.

So far 28 bodies have been recovered. He said that more than 100 people have died in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh between June 27 and August 9 and the state has suffered a loss of about Rs 842 crore. Officials said that 288 roads in the state are closed, out of which 138 roads were closed on Friday and 150 on Saturday. The Regional Meteorological Office issued an orange alert on Sunday and warned of heavy to very heavy rains at some places in five districts – Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Una. He said that thunderstorms, lightning and rain are forecast.

The weather office has also warned of flash floods in some places of Chamba, Hamirpur, Kullu, Mandi, Sirmaur and Shimla districts. It said that due to strong winds, trees, crops, sensitive structures and ‘kutcha’ houses may get damaged and waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas.

Children swept away in swollen rivers

Two people, including a child, were swept away in rain-swollen rivers in two separate incidents in Uttarakhand on Sunday. According to information received from the State Emergency Operations Center, a child was swept away in the Gaula river in Rajpura area of ​​Haldwani in Nainital district at around 1 pm.

On receiving the information, police and disaster management team reached the spot and launched a search operation after which the body of Amarjeet (10) was recovered near Aanvalgate. In another incident, a person was swept away in the Ganga river at Lakadghat Shyampur in Rishikesh. The State Disaster Response Force said that three friends had gone to take a bath in the river, during which one of them was swept away by the strong current of the river. The deceased has been identified as Devendra Kumar Jagpal (40).
