Jammu & Kashmir: India is matching its infrastructure on both the eastern and western borders in Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh to thwart any invasion. Border Roads Organization (BRO) chief Lt Gen Rajiv Chaudhary said projects to strengthen border infrastructure are the first priority of the government to protect and safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
Rajiv Chaudhary said that the work on the world’s highest airfield is about to start. The lieutenant general was on a review of the routes for the Amarnath Yatra, which begins on July 1 and ends on August 31. Under the strategic road project connecting Pahalgam to Sonamarg, BRO is carrying out road and track maintenance work for the first time.
Lt Gen Chaudhary told ABP News, ‘We are competing much better than what you are thinking that China is making. Because of which there is no need to think much that we are behind. We are matching the capabilities of infrastructure development on the borders. He said that the government has already announced 662 ‘Vibrant Village’ packages for areas near the border and development is happening very fast.
Projects worth Rs 16,000 crore to be made
Lt Gen Chaudhary said that in the last two years, 205 projects have been completed on the LAC. These were dedicated to the nation by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and this year we are trying to complete 176 projects worth Rs 6,200 crore. The Center has increased our budget by almost 100 percent this year. The government has a lot of faith in us. We make roads for five ministries. Our budget increases every year. This year, we aim to make projects worth Rs 16,000 crore. These include roads, bridges and tunnels and airfields.
There are two very important projects in Ladakh
When asked about the strategically important projects in Ladakh, the top BRO official said that the Chusul-Dungti-Fukche-Demchok highway is a very important road. In the next two months, work will begin on the Nyoma airfield, which is one of the highest airfields in the world. These are two very important projects in Ladakh. The tunneling work is almost complete.
He also said on the Ladakh-Himachal Pradesh border that after the completion of the Shinku La tunnel, it will be the world’s highest tunnel. Earlier, briefing the media about the work on the yatra routes, he said that the work is going on round the clock and would be completed by June 15.
Lt Gen Chowdhary said that the roads have been widened and the gradients and curves have been maintained. The basic scope of work includes snow clearance, widening of routes, restoration of all foot bridges, repair of hand rails. Work is being done to ensure that there is no inconvenience due to landslides and five lakh pilgrims are expected to turn up this year.
