Supreme Court: The hearing in the Supreme Court on the petition of Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was postponed to September 30. Both of them have demanded cancellation of the defamation case filed by BJP leader Rajeev Babbar. The High Court had refused this.
Complainant Rajeev Babbar’s lawyer told the judges on Friday (27 September 2024) that despite a caveat being filed on her behalf, the registry did not inform her that the case would be heard today. On this, the bench of Justices Hrishikesh Rai and SVN Bhatti postponed the hearing to Monday.
Was accused of deleting names from the voter list
Atishi And in December 2018, Kejriwal had accused BJP of deleting the names of 4 lakh voters of Agarwal community from the list in Delhi. Later he also accused him of cutting off the name of a total of Rs 30 lakh. Apart from the Bania class, he also talked about deleting the names of Purvanchali and Muslim voters. Calling this a false allegation, the BJP leader had filed a defamation case.
Refusing to quash the case, on September 2, 2024, the Delhi High Court had said that the accused had accused a party without any evidence to gain political advantage. This cannot be considered correct. Therefore, both should face trial in the lower court. Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has ordered both of them to appear on October 3, 2024.
BJP leaders angry over Kejriwal’s claims
Kejriwal had claimed, “Agarwal community was a staunch voter of BJP, but after the implementation of demonetization and GST, these people were angry with BJP. That is why BJP got their votes cut.” Filing a defamation case over Arvind Kejriwal’s claims, BJP leader Rajeev Babbar alleged that Kejriwal tried to instigate people against the Bharatiya Janata Party on social media platforms.
