The Indian Army’s Regiment of Artillery is looking to use the expertise of Indian industry to produce the 155mm/52 calibre towed gun system, which will be lightweight, versatile and meet future technological advancements.
Senior military officials told news agency ANI, “A tender has been issued to procure 400, 155-mm 52-calibre Towed Artillery Gun Systems (TAGS) and towing vehicles from Indian firms, which can be procured under the Indian-IDDM category. The firms that have received the tender include Bharat Forge, Larsen & Toubro, Adani and Ordnance Factory Board.”
The army has already given a tender
Let us tell you that the Indian Army has already issued a tender to buy 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) to strengthen the mounted gun system for its needs on the borders with China and Pakistan. The howitzer designed, developed and manufactured in India means that it will be completely Indian in every way. The Army wants these guns to be light in weight and easy to deploy in high altitude areas like the old Bofors guns.
Four contracts completed in a decade
This entire procurement process is part of the army’s plan to mediumise with indigenous guns and is likely to be completed by the year 2042. In the last 1 decade, four contracts have been concluded for the procurement of 155 mm howitzers. These gun systems have already been inducted into the army and more number of regiments are being equipped with these guns.
