Violence in Manipur: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi termed the recent violent clashes and ongoing violence in Manipur as extremely disturbing and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and work towards restoring peace in the region.
A day after bodies of three of the six people missing in Manipur were fished out of the river, protesters on Saturday attacked the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs, prompting the government to impose indefinite curfew in five districts. And internet services were suspended in some parts of the state.
Rahul Gandhi expressed concern
Rahul Gandhi wrote on social media that the recent violent clashes and continuous violence in Manipur have created deep concern. He said, “The recent violent clashes and continuous bloodshed in Manipur have shocked the country. After more than a year of division and suffering, every Indian expected that the central and state governments would work towards reconciliation. Will make every possible effort and find a solution.”
Rahul Gandhi said, “I urge the Prime Minister to once again visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace and harmony in the region.” More than 200 people have lost their lives in violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur since May last year.
Curfew imposed again in Imphal West district
Curfew was reimposed in Imphal West district from Saturday till further orders due to the prevailing law and order situation in the area. Earlier, the authorities had relaxed the curfew from 5:00 am to 8:00 pm on November 16 as per the order of November 15. However, this relaxation order has now been canceled with immediate effect. The order states that persons involved in essential services including healthcare will be exempted from the curfew.
According to the order issued by Imphal West District Magistrate Kirankumar, “The above mentioned curfew relaxation order in the district is canceled with immediate effect. Complete curfew is being imposed from 4:30 pm on November 16, 2024, till further orders.”
