Shortage In The Army: Congress leader Anil Kumar Yadav Mandadi had questioned the central government about the shortage of soldiers in the army. In response to this question, the Defense Ministry refused to share data related to the shortage of soldiers in the armed forces, citing national security.
Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth gave a written reply regarding this in the Rajya Sabha on Monday (5 August 2024). In his address, he said that the information sought by the Congress leader is a sensitive matter related to national security and disclosing such data would not be in the national interest.
How many army posts were vacant in 2023?
On March 13, 2023, Ajay Bhatt, the then Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence, said that, as of March 10, 2023, the Army had 8,070 officer vacancies and 127,673 vacancies among Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (OR). Apart from this, he had informed that between January 1, 2023 and March 10, 2023, 613 officer posts and 19,065 JCO/OR posts were filled.
The recent change in policy regarding recruitment has come after the launch of the Agneepath scheme on June 14, 2022. Under the Agneepath scheme, soldiers are recruited for a period of four years, in which a maximum of 1.75 lakh personnel will be recruited by the year 2026.
Congress targeted, made serious allegations
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a post on social media platform Narendra Modi Tagging him, he criticized the central government for accusing it of hiding information about the shortage of soldiers in the army.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the government had disclosed such data earlier as well and why this practice has suddenly changed now. Citing the data provided in March 2023, he said that at that time more than 1.55 lakh posts were vacant in the army.
