Supreme Court expressed concern over the death of cheetahs in Kuno National Park, asked the Center to consider

Supreme Court On Cheetah’s Death: The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the death of 3 cheetahs brought from Africa in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park. The court has said that it would not be right to settle the cheetahs in just one place. An attempt should be made to settle them in some other sanctuary as well. During the hearing, the judges made it clear that they were not questioning the government. He is only expressing his concern about the cheetahs.

On behalf of the government, the court was told that the investigation is going on on the reason for the death of 3 cheetahs. The government also told that a female cheetah has given birth to four cubs. This is a big success of the Cheetah project. Cheetahs are living comfortably in the environment of Kuno. One leopard died of disease. The rest died after getting injured in a fight.

The bench raised questions on the central government

During the hearing, the bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sanjay Karol also raised questions as to why the Government of India accepted the female cheetah affected by kidney disease. Justice Gavai said, “Cheetahs were brought to India after a long time. Keeping them in one place can put everyone at risk. Therefore, it should be considered to settle them in an alternative sanctuary as well. This sanctuary can be in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan or Maharashtra.

What did the central government say?

During this, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing on behalf of the Central Government, said that leopards were not in India for almost 75 years. Therefore, there is still a dearth of experts associated with them. The government is currently considering several measures for their protection. These include the idea of settling them in some other sanctuary. Mukundra National Park of Rajasthan is ready for this. Apart from this, another sanctuary is also being considered in Madhya Pradesh.

Supreme Court also asked to suggest

At the end of the hearing, the court asked the 3-member expert committee constituted by it to give its suggestions to the National Task Force in 15 days, so that they could be considered. The Supreme Court has said that the matter will be heard next in the month of July. The Supreme Court also said that the Cheetah project is an important project for the country. The thinking related to party politics should not be used while choosing a new sanctuary.
