Tamil Nadu BJP leader K. Annamalai on Tuesday criticized the recent notification of the Central Board of Secondary Education i.e. CBSE. In this notification, the third language has been made mandatory for class 9 students in CBSE schools.
Annamalai has said that this step will put unnecessary burden of studies on the students. He has also appealed to the Union Education Ministry to withdraw this notification. This notification is being criticized in Tamil Nadu. This is being considered as an alleged attempt to impose Hindi.
Annamalai believes that third language will cause mental pressure.
In this whole matter, Annamalai believes that it is not right to burden the students of class IX with a third language in the middle of the academic session. This will put mental pressure on them. Their academic performance may deteriorate. If students have selected their favorite language in 6th class, then making changes in 9th class can be difficult.
While advocating the previous policy, Annamalai has said that he had opposed the three language rule in class 9th, but had supported the announcement made by CBSE in April to make three languages compulsory from class 6th.
What is the decision of CBSE?
Before this, from July 1, 2026, study of three languages (R1 R2 R3) will be mandatory for class 9th. At least two of these languages should be of Indian origin. Students who want to study a foreign language can do so only as a third language. Whereas their other two languages should be of Indian origin or they may be studying it as a fourth additional language.
