Coromandel Train Accident: A major train accident took place on Friday (June 2) in Balasore district of Odisha. So far 70 people have died in this accident and more than 350 have been injured. To help the victims, relief and rescue operations are being carried out at a rapid pace. This accident happened due to the derailment of Coromandel Express and Bengaluru-Howrah Express train and the collision of a goods train. At the time of this accident, the passengers present in the train told about the horrific scene of this accident.
A passenger told news agency ANI, “I was sleeping at the time of the accident. As soon as the train overturned, I opened my eyes. 10-15 people were lying on top of me. I was pressed down, I got hurt on my hands and feet.” Somehow after coming out, I saw many people lying dead there. Some had their hands chopped off, some had their legs chopped off. It was a terrible scene.”
Railway Minister announced compensation
President on this incident Draupadi MurmuMany leaders including PM Modi have expressed grief. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those with minor injuries. On the other hand, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has reviewed the accident situation and rescue operations in the Special Relief Commissioner Control Room.
He said, “I will reach the spot tomorrow morning to take stock of the situation.” Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena told that NDRF and SDRF teams are on the spot. 600-700 rescue forces are working there. The rescue operation will go on throughout the night. Our priority is to save the injured and get them treated.
How did this accident happen?
A railway official said, “Several coaches of Howrah-bound 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed at Bahanga Bazar and fell onto another track. The coaches also overturned. The coaches of the Coromandel Express collided with a goods train after derailing, due to which the goods train also came under the grip of the accident. He told, “The accident happened at Bahanga Bazar station, about 255 km from Howrah, at around 7 pm.”
