This virus spreads rapidly especially in crowded and closed places, hence its cases suddenly increase in places like schools, hospitals, hostels and cruise ships. In a recent case, more than 100 passengers and crew members fell ill after the spread of Noro virus on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship. According to the American health agency CDC, among the thousands of passengers on the ship, a large number of people complained of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach ache.

How dangerous is Nora virus?

According to the US health agency Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Norovirus is one of the biggest causes of acute gastroenteritis, i.e. infection in the stomach and intestines, in the world. Every year crores of people fall prey to it and it is considered to play a major role in cases of vomiting and diarrhoea. Most patients recover in a few days, but for small children, the elderly and people with weak immunity, this infection can take a serious form.

How do you get infected with this virus?

Symptoms of this infection start suddenly. The patient may complain of severe vomiting, frequent diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. Many people also experience symptoms like fever, headache, body ache and chills. Usually the patient recovers in one to three days, but health agencies say that even after recovery, the infected person can continue spreading the virus. According to the CDC, there are many different types of norovirus, so a person can become infected with it several times in their life. Even once infected, the body does not get complete protection from other types of viruses. This is the reason why its outbreaks are seen again and again all over the world.

How many people fall prey to it every year?

The CDC estimates that about 685 million cases of norovirus occur every year worldwide. Of these, approximately 20 crore children are below five years of age. According to the report, every year about 50 thousand children die due to problems related to this infection, especially in those countries where treatment and hydration facilities are limited.

How long does it take for its symptoms to appear in the body?

Symptoms start appearing within 12 to 48 hours of infection. The biggest danger is dehydration i.e. lack of water in the body. The body loses water rapidly due to continuous vomiting and diarrhea. Dry mouth, dizziness, weakness and less urine can be its signs. Less tears while crying and excessive sleepiness in children are also considered its symptoms.

How can we prevent this?

Noro virus spreads very fast. Infection can occur by coming in contact with an infected person, eating contaminated food, drinking dirty water or touching an infected surface. Its risk is higher in places like cruise ships, schools, hospitals and nursing homes. According to CDC, an infected person can spread the virus even two weeks after recovery. At present there is no specific treatment or vaccine available for Norovirus. Doctors advise patients to take more fluids, take rest and take care of cleanliness. Antibiotics do not affect this infection, because it is a disease caused by viruses and not bacteria.
