While narrating the story of Jupiter Trayodashi Pradosh fast in front of eighty-eight thousand sages like Shaunak etc., Sutji says that once upon a time there was a fierce war between Devraj Indra and a demon named Vritra. At that time the gods defeated the army of demons with their might. Seeing a large number of his soldiers dead, Vritrasura became angry and he himself got ready for war.

With the power of his demonic illusion, he assumed a very monstrous and terrifying form and started challenging the gods for war. As soon as they saw the fierce form of Vritrasura in the battlefield, all the gods including Indradi got scared and they appealed to Devguru Brihaspati for help. Hearing the prayers of the gods, Devguru appeared there and asked the gods the reason for their worry.

Indradi gods said – ‘O Gurudev! A fierce demon named Vritra has attacked Devlok, he is very powerful. Please help us and show us the way to resolve this crisis. Devguru Brihaspati said ‘O Devendra! This Vritrasura is very elusive, I will tell you his story, listen carefully.

Vritrasura was very ascetic and devoted, he had pleased Lord Shiva by performing rigorous penance on Gandhamadan mountain. In his previous life he was a demon king named Chitrarath. He had his kingdom in the beautiful forest located near your kingdom. Many sages, saints, mahatmas etc. used to do penance and meditation in that forest. That place is considered very favorable for attaining God.

Once Chitrarath, while traveling, reached Mount Kailash. Lord Shiva was sitting on Mount Kailash along with his consort Goddess Parvati and was addressing a gathering. Chitrarath, after seeing his form and Goddess Parvati sitting near him, folded his hands and mockingly said to Lord Shiva, ‘O Lord! We are ordinary creatures, that is why we remain under the influence of Maya and remain entangled in the attraction of women, but nowhere in the world of gods have I seen anyone sitting in a meeting with a woman.

Hearing these sarcastic words from the mouth of Chitrarath, Lord Shiva said laughingly – ‘O King! My practical approach is different from everyone else. I have drank the great poison that destroys the world like Kalkoot. Even after this, you are making fun of me like a person with little knowledge.

Goddess Parvati also became very angry at Chitrarath and looking towards him, mother said, Oh evil creature! You have ridiculed my master and Mahadev who is prevalent in the entire living world in front of me, hence you will definitely have to suffer the punishment for this sinful act of yours. All the knowledgeable people present in this meeting know the essence of all the scriptures.

Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatan and Sanatkumar present here are engrossed in Shiva devotion after destroying all types of ignorance. Hey idiot! You consider yourself very clever, hence you must learn this lesson so that in future you will never have the audacity to make fun of the gathering of saints and scholars. I curse you that immediately you will fall from this plane of yours and go to the earth and will be born in the form of a demon.

As soon as he was cursed by Goddess Jagdamba, Chitrarath fell to earth from his plane and was born into a demon form and became infamous by the name of Mahasur. An ascetic sage named Tvashta, with his power of penance, manifested that demon in the form of Vrittasur.

Brihaspati ji further says – Vrittasur started worshiping Lord Shiva by following celibacy. As a result of his devotion to Shiva, he has gained immense strength and bravery. Therefore, being a devotee of Shiva, you cannot defeat him. My suggestion is that if you want to conquer that mighty demon then observe Brihaspati Pradosh Vrat with devotion.

Sutji says – As per the advice of Devguru Brihaspati, the gods observed Guru Pradosh Vrat with complete rituals, as a result of which Vrittasur was defeated and the terrible crisis that had come to the world was resolved. In this way, whoever sincerely observes this most virtuous fast, all his troubles are mitigated and his desired wishes are fulfilled.
