Story of Apara Ekadashi

Shri Krishna said, “O Arjun! The name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha month is Apara, because it bestows immense wealth and virtues and destroys all sins. People who observe this fast become famous in the world.

Due to the effect of fasting on Apara Ekadashi, the sins caused by murder, adultery, defamation of others etc. are destroyed. Not only this, the terrible sins like adultery, false testimony, false speech, reading false Vedas, making false scriptures, misleading someone through astrology, cheating people by pretending to be a false doctor etc. are also destroyed by fasting on Apara Ekadashi.

A Kshatriya who runs away from the battlefield goes to hell, but by observing the fast of Apara Ekadashi, he also goes to heaven. Those disciples who criticize the Guru after acquiring knowledge from the Guru definitely go to hell. By fasting on Apara Ekadashi, it becomes possible for them to go to heaven.

The same result that is obtained by taking bath in the three Pushkars or by taking bath in the month of Kartik or by offering Pind Daan to the ancestors on the banks of Ganga, is obtained by fasting on Apara Ekadashi.

In ancient times, there was a pious king named Mahidhwaj. His younger brother Vajradhwaj was very cruel, unrighteous and unjust. He had hatred towards his elder brother. That sinner killed his elder brother one night and buried his body under a wild peepal tree. Due to this untimely death, the king started living on the same peepal tree in the form of a ghost and started doing many mischiefs.

One day suddenly a sage named Dhaumya passed by there. He saw the ghost and came to know about his past through the power of spiritual power. With the power of his penance, he understood the cause of the ghost’s mischief. The sage was pleased and brought down the ghost from the Peepal tree and preached the knowledge of the afterlife.

The merciful sage himself observed a fast on Apara (Achala) Ekadashi to free the king from the ghostly form and offered his virtue to the ghost to free him from Agati. Due to the influence of this virtue, the king was freed from his ghostly form. Thanking the sage, he assumed a divine body and went to heaven sitting in Pushpak Viman.
