Bhadrapad 2024: The month of Sawan ended on 19 August 2024 and the month of Bhadrapada started on 20 August. Just as the month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva, similarly Bhadrapada is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This month symbolizes the arrival of Ganapati Mangal. Therefore, this month is also called auspicious.
According to Swami Anjani Nandan Das, Lord Vishnu, the controller of the universe, sleeps at King Bali’s place from Ashadhi Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. Therefore, Lord Shiva controls the universe during the period of four months i.e. Chaturmas (Chaturmas 2024). Therefore, the Shiv family controls the universe till the month of Kartik. Shiva in Shravan, Ganesha in Bhadrapada and Goddess Parvati in Ashwin (Navratri).
In the Puranas, the month of Sawan is said to be the best and favourite month of Lord Shiva.
द्वादशास्वपी मासेषु श्रावानो मेयतिवल्लभः।
श्रावनारहं यन्महात्म्यं तेनासौ श्रावानो मत:॥
Meaning- Out of the 12 months, the month of Saavan is most dear to Lord Shiva. Its significance is worth listening (shravan), hence it is called Shravan.
Lord Shiva had blessed Lord Ganesha that he would be worshipped in the month of Bhadrapada.
Chaturthyan Tvam Samutpanno Bhadre Masi Ganeshwar.
Asite cha and pakshe chandrasyodayane auspicious.
O Ganesha! You were born on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapad during the auspicious period of moonrise and your form appeared from the mind of Goddess Parvati during the first quarter of the night, therefore your best fast will be on that day.
Therefore, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in the month of Bhadrapada and Ganesh Utsav is celebrated, in which the idol of Ganapati ji is kept for 10 days. However, along with Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna was also born on the Ashtami of Bhadrapada and Balarama was born on the Shashti Shukla Paksha (Garg Samhita Chapter No. 10). Therefore, Balarama Jayanti and Krishna Janmashtami also occur in Bhadrapada.
