Grandmothers often ask to put fingerprints on the dough after kneading it. If she herself does this work, she definitely makes three fingerprints in the flour. Do you know why grandmothers say this?

Why are fingerprints made after kneading the dough?

• Pinda Daan is performed to appease the souls of ancestors, in which a circular ‘Pind’ made of rice flour is used. Even after kneading the dough remains round like a ball. Therefore, balls of flour are considered the food of ancestors.
• Making roti from dough ball is not auspicious. Therefore, after kneading the dough, grandmothers ask to make fingerprints in the dough, so that the bread made from the dough becomes edible for the family members.
• Apart from the dough, in many round dishes like Baati, Baffle, Balushali, Vada etc., depressions are also made by making fingerprints, so that it becomes separate from the round ball.
