Sawan 2026: Why not eat curd in Sawan? Know the biggest reason behind this

The holy month of Sawan for Shiva devotees is going to start from 30th July this year, which will end with Rakshabandhan on 28th August. According to astrological calculations, in the year 2026, there will be a total of 4 Mondays and 4 Mangala Gauri fasts in the month of Sawan.

The month of Sawan is considered the time to worship Lord Shiva as well as adopt a virtuous lifestyle. During this period, many people avoid consuming curd, brinjal and green leafy vegetables.

Although there is no clear mention of a universal ban on eating curd during the entire month of Sawan in religious texts, Ayurveda and Ritucharya (diet according to season) recommend limiting the consumption of curd during the rainy season. 3

According to religious beliefs, people observe fast, worship and satvik food in Saavan. For this reason many families avoid certain food items including curd as per tradition.

At the same time, according to the rituals described in Charak Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam, the main texts of Ayurveda, the digestive power (Agni) becomes weak during the rainy season.

From a scientific point of view also, due to increase in moisture in the atmosphere during monsoon, bacteria and fungus grow rapidly. Health experts say that during this season, some people may suffer from throat infection or digestive problems due to fermented foods like curd.
