Will ‘Avikli’ injection become a panacea for sugar patients? Big claim of senior doctor of Patna

The number of diabetes patients is increasing rapidly in India. According to statistics, more than 10 crore people across the country are suffering from this disease. Among these, there is a large population who have to take insulin injections every day to keep their blood sugar level under control. This pain of needle prick every day is no less than mental and physical torture for the patients. Meanwhile, a relief news has emerged for diabetes patients.

Denmark’s famous pharmaceutical manufacturing company Novo Nordisk has launched a new and modern insulin injection in India, named Avikali. The biggest feature of this medicine is that it is a ‘weekly basal insulin’. This means that there will be no need to apply it daily, rather taking it only once a week will do the trick.

Will this medicine really prove to be a magical miracle or ‘panacea’ in the treatment of diabetes? On this question, Dr. Manoj Kumar, a well-known diabetes specialist of Patna and Superintendent of ‘Gardiner Super Specialty Hospital’ of Bihar Government, made a big claim and advised the patients to exercise some caution.

Will ‘Avikli’ really do wonders?

Dr. Manoj Kumar had a special conversation about this new medicine. He said that it is true that the medicine launched by the Danish company is a type of insulin and it has been designed to be given once a week. Before launching this medicine in the market, research and clinical studies were done for a long time. This medicine enters the body and acts slowly and claims to keep sugar under control for a week.

However, Dr. Manoj Kumar cautioned the patients and said that it is too early to consider this medicine as a ‘panacea’ or surefire cure for diabetes. It is still a little difficult to say practically whether the blood sugar will remain completely normal for the whole week on the basis of just one insulin.

The real test of the medicine is still pending

According to Dr. Manoj Kumar, when a new medicine comes in the market, there may be a slight difference between the paper claims and the reality. He told that only when we doctors start using this medicine practically on our patients, its real results and conditions will be known. Unless a doctor himself sees the response of the patients, no new medicine can be called 100% perfect.

Reminding him of an old incident, he said that such experiments have already been done in medical science. Earlier too, some such medicines or insulin were introduced which claimed to have long term effect, but in practical life they did not become very successful or popular.

Companies are doing research, but it is necessary to wait for now

Many big pharmaceutical companies around the world are continuously doing research on how to free patients from the need to inject insulin daily. Once the system of one day a week is established, the life of the patients will become much easier.

Dr. Manoj Kumar says that it would be absolutely wrong to think that you have given ‘Avikli’ injection once a week and now you can be completely careless about your diet or lifestyle. He said that as soon as this medicine is available with us, we will start using it after seeing the condition of the patients. Only after this will it be clear how effective and safe this new weekly medicine is proving to be on the bodies of Indian patients.
