Social media immersed in devotion
This holy video posted on July 12 has so far been viewed by more than 1.34 lakh Sanatan Dharma followers and social media users. What is the religious significance of Varkari tradition?
Union with God: This journey is not just a walk, but a means for the devotee to meet God (Vitthal). Devotees carry the Padukas (Charan Paduka) of Saint Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Saint Tukaram Maharaj in the palanquin and take them to Pandharpur.
Removing pride: People participating in this yatra (called Varkari) wear Tulsi garlands, apply sandalwood tilak on their forehead and sing ‘Gyanba-Tukaram’ to the beat of drums and manjiras. It is believed that this walking journey of hundreds of kilometers removes pride from a person.
All the same: According to experts, this tradition brings everyone together by eradicating caste discrimination from the society and makes the feeling of ‘the whole world is one family’ true.
Why is the journey undertaken?
Vitthal Bhakti: On the day of Ashadhi Ekadashi, to have darshan of Lord Vitthal (who is the form of Shri Krishna) and to express one’s love for him.
Honoring Saints: To keep the good thoughts and teachings of the saints alive in the society.
Message of equality: To increase brotherhood by erasing the difference between high and low in the society.
All these palanquin processions will reach Pandharpur on the holy occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi. After taking bath in Chandrabhaga river, lakhs of devotees will bow their heads at the feet of Lord Vitthal and seek blessings.
