After the ban on ‘Darul Uloom, Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom’ located at Imam Saheb in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, political and social activity has intensified in the valley. On one hand, politicians, educationists and social organizations are demanding lifting of the ban citing the future of more than 800 students studying in this school, while on the other hand, Jammu and Kashmir Police has completely justified this action.
Citing serious intelligence and investigation reports (dossier), the police have revealed a large network of radicalism and terrorism running within the Madrasa.
‘There is a history of radicalization and recruitment of terrorists- Police
Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued a detailed clarification and made it clear that this action has not been taken in any haste, but on the basis of a solid dossier prepared by the Shopian District Police. According to the police, credible evidence proves that this school has a long history of being involved in spreading radicalization and recruiting terrorists.
17 former students became terrorists, killed
Presenting shocking figures, the police said, “17 alumni of this institute were brainwashed. They joined terrorist organizations and were later killed in separate encounters with security forces. This clearly shows a consistent pattern of radicalizing the youth and pushing them into terrorism.”
Madrasa occupied by relatives of slain terrorists
Security agencies were receiving such intelligence reports from time to time, which show that the environment of this institute had become a haven for illegal and anti-national activities. Police investigation has revealed two biggest reasons behind the ban: Close relatives of many of the dead terrorists were holding important positions in the management of Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom. Members of the banned organization ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’ were working here through proxies to avoid legal action and were secretly running their anti-national agenda.
Action taken under UAPA, administration gave chance to reply
On the basis of all these solid evidences, action was initiated against Darul Uloom, Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom under Section 8 of the ‘Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act’ (UAPA). Officials clarified that during the action, the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir had issued a notice to the management of the institute and given full and fair opportunity to present its side.
The management of the institute also lodged its objections, which were closely examined along with the physical evidence and intelligence gathered by the district police. Based on thorough deliberations and evidence, the Divisional Commissioner ultimately declared this institution illegal through an order dated April 24.
Now it remains to be seen what further steps the political parties take after this tough stance of the administration regarding the future of 800 students.
