Akola Clash: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday directed the police to take strict action against those responsible for the riots in Akola and Shegaon and appealed to the people to maintain peace and social harmony. This information was given by his office.

The chief minister’s office said in a statement, “The situation in Akola and Shegaon is now under control and police force is deployed. On the instructions of state Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, state Rural Development Minister Girish Mahajan personally visited Akola, while Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil reviewed the situation in Shegaon.”

Shinde appealed to the people not to post any controversial messages or pictures on social media and not to take law into their own hands. The statement said that he urged the public to avoid hurting the sentiments of other communities. So far more than 100 people have been detained in connection with the clash between two groups in Akola. One person was killed and eight others, including two policemen, were injured in these clashes. A police officer said that two groups clashed over a religious post in the Old City area of the city on Saturday night.

At Shegaon in Ahmednagar district, at least five people were injured in communal clashes over a procession and several shops and vehicles were damaged in stone pelting. An official said that after the incident that took place on Sunday night, the police have so far detained 32 people and registered cases against 150 others.
