Indian Economy: Former British Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss said on Saturday (16 November 2024) that western countries are in serious crisis and India has left the British economy behind. He said this in the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.
Truss said in his address, “The British economy has now lagged behind India, where many important economic policies and reforms have taken place.” He also said that a lot can be achieved between India and Britain in areas like technology and agriculture. He praised India’s progress in the last hundred years and described it as playing a big role on the global stage.
Speaking on India’s role in the future, Truss said, “India now represents the world’s largest population and long-standing democracy. It will have an important place in leadership in the future, which is very encouraging.” He described India’s participation in the Quad as important in view of the growing threat from China.
Truss’ comments on British economy
Truss expressed pessimism about the British economy, saying that he did not think the British economy would be able to recover any time soon. He also said that everything will not be back on track in Britain unless the powerful bureaucracy there is controlled.
Truss’ stance on Conservative and Labor parties
Truss said that despite 14 years of Conservative Party rule, people did not feel any significant improvement in the situation. People replaced the Conservative Party and elected the Labor Party, which is now bringing more taxes and stricter rules. Referring to Tony Blair, Truss said that the Labor leader had made important changes in the functioning of the state and bureaucracy in Britain.
He said, “Blair removed power from Parliament and handed it over to bureaucrats, which led to stagnation in Britain, and was a major reason people voted against Labour.”
