Israel-Lebanon Meeting: Israel has agreed in principle to a US-backed ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now working out how to present it to the public. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has held high-level consultations on this matter.
The meeting took place at a time when Israel was being hit by rockets from Lebanon throughout the day and the Israeli Air Force was repeatedly attacking Hezbollah targets in Beirut. Kan, Ynet and Haaretz reports, quoting officials in Jerusalem, Washington and Beirut, said the approval of the resolution was not final. Israel said many other issues still need to be resolved, but Jerusalem approved the main principles of the proposal. Hezbollah Chief Naim Qasim said last week that his group has reviewed the ceasefire proposal and now everything is in Israel’s hands.
These are the three stages of the proposal
Haaretz reports that the proposal would include three phases: A ceasefire after which Hezbollah would withdraw its forces north of the Litani River. Second- Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and third- Israeli-Lebanese talks on demarcation of disputed border areas.
Israel placed this condition
The proposal also states that an international body led by the US will be tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and that Israel expects to receive a letter from Washington stating that the Lebanese army and international forces will If Hezbollah violates the terms of the ceasefire even if no action is taken, its right to take military action will be confirmed.
On Netanyahu’s plan to sell this deal to the public, Kahn said that its purpose is to present the ceasefire not as an agreement but as beneficial for Israel.
