Indonesia Volcano Erupts: 10 people have died due to the eruption of Mount Levotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia at midnight on Sunday. Officials said on Monday (04 November) that the explosion occurred at Mount Levotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia, which released explosive clouds of lava. Due to this the authorities had to evacuate many nearby villages.

According to the news agency ‘Reuters’, Hadi Wijaya, spokesperson of the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center, while giving information on Monday, said that the explosion occurred at 11.57 pm on Sunday night at Mount Levotobi Laki-Laki located on Flores Island in eastern Indonesia. Due to this, a red column of lava, volcanic ash and flaming rocks emerged.

Lava fell on people’s homes

Hadi Wijaya said, “After the explosion, the power went out and then it started raining. After this there was a strong lightning, which spread panic among the local people.” He also said that the authorities have raised the status of the volcano to the highest alert level. There has also been talk of cleaning a radius of seven kilometers (four miles) from the crater. Fire lava and volcanic rocks fell into settlements located about four kilometers (two miles) away from the volcano, burning and damaging residents’ homes.

Seven villages were affected

Local official Hieronymus Lamavuran said at least 10 people had died by Monday afternoon. Seven villages have been affected by this explosion. “This morning we have started evacuating residents to other villages located about 20 kilometers (13 miles) from the crater,” he said.

The sky had turned red due to the volcano

Photos shared by officials showed the evening sky above the volcano looking red due to the eruption, while footage showed some wooden houses on fire and residents wearing masks being evacuated. More footage showed thick volcanic ash covering roads and buildings in a village.

Emergency declared for next 58 days

Indonesia’s disaster agency has warned of possible floods and cold lava flows in the coming days, agency spokesman Abdul Muhri said. The local government has declared a state of emergency for the next 58 days, meaning the central government can help provide aid to the 10,000 affected residents. Officials are still collecting data about the number of people evacuated. The nearest airport located in Maumere city has been temporarily closed.

Even before this the volcano had erupted several times

Indonesia is located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area of ​​high seismic activity over several tectonic plates. This explosion happened after several explosions. In May, the eruption of Mount Ibu, a volcano on Halmahera island, led to the evacuation of seven villages. Ruang Volcano in North Sulawesi also erupted in May and authorities had to evacuate more than 12,000 people.
