A bamboo stick was made into a spear
Arshad said in a conversation on a YouTube channel, I always wanted to become a cricketer, but my brother used to ask me to do athletics, because it is an individual sport. In 2012, I participated in events like discus throw, javelin throw in addition to running in school. In Punjab, I was first trained by coach Rashid Ahmed Saki in the village ground. In 2014 itself, Arshad went to Lahore for the first time to participate in the Punjab Youth Festival, after which a friend of his asked him to join the trials of Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority. Arshad told that there was a time when I used to go to the village artisan with a bamboo stick and ask him to shape it into a spear. Saki sahab used to tell me for hours how to use my elbow to throw the javelin and that was my first memory of taking javelin throwing seriously. Arshad said that an athlete had thrown up to a distance of 60 meters, but I was adamant that I would not go home empty-handed. I requested the authorities to give me a month’s time and after training with Bukhari sir I was able to throw up to 65 metres, after which I got the WAPDA contract.
